Health declares the water unfit for consumption in Marchena, once the management company of the local water service has notified values of a pesticide above the regulatory level

The Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucía has declared "not suitable for consumption" the water distributed in the municipality of Marchena, after the notice raised by Hidralia and notified to SINAC about a sample that exceeded the regulatory values of MCPA, a pesticide for agricultural use.

Hidralia, the company responsible for the supply of water in decline in the municipality of Marchena, carries out permanent analytical controls on the entire distribution system (networks and tanks) in compliance with the self-control protocol approved by Health and in accordance with current Legislation.

Beyond the analysis and quantification of the legally required parameters, Hidralia, in order to improve the guarantee and safety of people's health and the quality of drinking water, incorporates into this analytical control plan, the determination of another series of additional parameters broadening the spectrum on pesticides and other elements over and above what is established in the regulations. In this sense, it has been possible to determine the presence of a pesticide compound (MCPA) in amounts slightly higher (0.11 µg / l) than the legal limit (0.1 µg / l) on February 15, 2021 and verifying the presence of the same in contrast sample within 24 hours after the initial sample (0.18 µg /).

The company, immediately after detecting the situation, has implemented the established protocols, communicating the detection of this parameter to the various responsible bodies. Thus, Health has declared the water distributed to Marchena unfit for consumption, waiting for the situation to normalize. To do this, Hidralia will take samples on a daily basis, to confirm the return to normality in the values of this compound.

The latest controls and counter-analysis to confirm these values rule out that the detection of this compound is related to the water distribution process in the municipality. Therefore, and in order to ensure the health of citizens, the supplying company has made itself available to the Ecija Plan Consortium, responsible for the production and supply of high water to the town, as many human and material resources as necessary. to study the origin of the problem and collaborate in its resolution. Likewise, they are made available to the health authority to make as many additional determinations as necessary, establishing, where appropriate, the appropriate protocols to minimize the impact on the population.

Health has transferred that the neighbors will not be able to drink the tap water or use it for food preparation. Yes, they can do it for their toilet, showers, personal hygiene and other domestic uses.

Hidralia makes an alternative supply of drinking water available to the residents of Marchena, through two tanker trucks that will be located in different parts of the town, although the location will change on a daily basis:

  • Truck_1 Fixed location in the San Ignacio Crossing (near Najocamon)
  • Truck_2 Alternate days in the Plaza de la Constitución and the fairgrounds

Drinking water will also be provided through complementary cisterns to the industries in the area and other sensitive areas or facilities such as health centers, residences ...

It should be remembered that the values established in RD140 / 2003 are intended to establish the sanitary criteria that drinking water must meet, to guarantee the health, quality and cleanliness of the water in order to protect people's health from adverse effects. derived from any type of water pollution if the exposure to these compounds were made on a chronic and continuous basis, which has not occurred so far in this specific episode.
